 Flying westward to Cleveland, the approaches to Bellefonte Air Field looked like this to the pilot on a reasonably clear day. This section of the country was known as "Hell's Stretch" and "Aviators' Graveyard." More fatal accidents occurred in this area than any other part of the transcontinental route because of the unpredictable and constantly changing weather conditions at certain times of the year. |
