Photo # 17 -- This photo is from the album of Air Mail Pioneer Peter Arthur Toronto who worked for the U.S. Air Mail Service from 12-18 to 1-20. Can you identify the plane? E-mail with photo number to: Air Mail Pioneers Viewer Rod Thorsen identifies the plane as a Martin MB-2NBS-1 ordered as a night bomber about 1920. His reference source is "United States Military Aircraft since 1909" by Swanborough/Bowers published by Putnam (UK). Viewer Ronald Billman: The U.S. Air Force Aircraft 1908-1946 by James C. Fahey lists it as a NB-1, now for the builders Martin built (20) 1921. Curtiss built (50) 1921-2 L.W.F. built (35) 1921-2 and Aeromarine built (25) 1922-3. All produced as duplicates. The photo of this plane in Mr. Fahey's book I.D.s it as a Curtiss-Martin NBS-1 type PS L-W-F stands for Love, Willard and Fowler of Long Island, N.Y., and all of this is listed in the aircraft section of Airfiles.com.
