Photo # 3 -- The Langley Aeroplane"  This aeroplane was designed and built by Prof. Langley, assisted by Charles Manley who designed the steam engine installed in the plane.  The initial trial was made May 6, 1896, near Washington, D.C, the plane falling into the Potomac River.  It was taken to Hammondsport, N.Y., where it made many successful flights.  Lt. E. Doherty, pilot.
